May 19th -- Pat Peters
-- 1:30 pm

Pat Peters, a terrific quilter from the St George area will be our guest at the May Meeting. Pat is the quilter that made the beautiful "Birds and Roses" quilt, that won best of show, at the last state festival. (Come to the Forum meeting at 11:00 to see how she made this beautiful quilt). Pat‘s quilting and sewing career started when she was a teenager. Her mother was a single mom with 2 daughters to raise, as her father had died when she was 4. Her mother taught her to sew her own clothes. Pat‘s sewing life continued as she was a young mother and she started to do alterations and even worked for a decorator for years in California. Pat has enjoyed quilting through the years and has made many award winning quilts. Here is her account of her quilting journey :

My quilting career started in 1972, when my sister and I took a quilting class at a college in San Fernando Valley, and I was hooked!! Except for that 1 month class, I basically was self taught in the beginning. Then I took a class learning appliqué, and I was really hooked after that. I started teaching quilting in 1991, and I really enjoyed it. I loved to watch the new quilters get as enthused as I was about quilting. I taught for 10 years in California. The only place I had entered quilts was at our local fair, and I won Best of Show 10 times in the 14 years we lived there. In 1994, we started our 1st Quilt Show when I was President of the Guild. It was a huge success with the hard work of the whole Guild.

I then branched out and sent some quilts to Glendale Quilt Show in Glendale, California, and I won Viewers Choice the first time (I wasn't a member of their guild so I couldn't be judged), and the second time I won Viewers Choice 2nd place, but the woman that won, I was in awe of her quilt, it was magnificent, and I was happy just to have won 2nd. I

also won Viewers Choice for my Eagle Dancer. I have entered quilts in the Grand Teton Quilt Show in Jackson WY, and won Best of Show for my Baltimore Album quilt.

We moved to Southern Utah in Sept 2002, and I joined the Dixie Quilt Guild in 2003. When the Quilt Fest was here in St. George in 2005, I entered my Baltimore Album Quilt, and I won Best of Show, and my Eagle Dancer won Viewers Choice that year. I entered 2 quilts in the Denver International Quilt Show in 2008, and won 1st place for best use of color. That was exciting; all of them are exciting and very rewarding.

When we had our first Quilt Show in St. George, Festival of Fabric Art, in 2007, I entered my Magical Medallions, and won Best of Show. I started mak-ing my last quilt, Birds and Roses, right after the 1st quilt show, and it took me 2 years to make, and I entered it in 2009 and won Best of Show, so I en-tered it at Quilt Fest, and won Best of Show there, and Viewers Choice also. I entered Birds and Roses in Road to California, and won 2nd place there. It is very humbling and rewarding to be recognized for something you love to do.

That is about my life of quilting in a nutshell!! I enjoy anything that has to do with quilting, I love looking at fabric, and when I find some that I like, I hate to cut it up, I just like to look at it for awhile, until something else comes along to take its place, and then I can finally bring myself to use it in a quilt.

Happy Quilting, Pat Peters

This is a quilt that diffiently went from ordinary to extraordinary. We can all make quilts that become extraordinary, especially when we get to learn from a master.
